The Ten Essential Storage Principles Of An ExtraOrdinary Home

Planning a remodel, major repair or new home construction? Looking for some terrific features to include that wont be budget busters? We can help! We started collecting over 1,000 uncommon, affordable convenience built-ins in 1998, when we first began writing books and consulting to help people have truly extraordinary but affordable homes. Here are our favorite storage ideas as well as our 10 essential storage principles. Add any of these to your next project and youll be on your way toward creating a home thats truly beyond the ordinary!

1. First of all, the purpose of good storage is to help you keep organized. (Contrary to what your spouse or teenagers might say, its not merely to hide monster messes where theyll get forgotten or require tons of time to sort through whenever someones looking for something!) Start your storage planning by listing all your possessions, their dimensions and where each item is normally used.

Rollaway storage with lockable wheels can tuck into a stall built into a lower cabinet, island, closet or under a sink. Or roll into place for being used under a table, desk or countertop. Ideal for laundry hampers and garbage cans; a cart for tableware (from walk-in pantry to the table and from the dishwasher back to the pantry); file cabinets; a stack of drawers; containers for toys, equipment, gift wrapping or craft supplies; an entire island; a wagon or cart to wheel around the house while putting various items it contains wherever they belong; and so much more.

2. There must be adequate storage space for all your current belongings, plus additional space for future acquisitions. And if you expect to raise a family in the house for decades, you might need as much space to grow into as you fill now. In addition, don't forget to plan extra space if you like to buy food or supplies in bulk.

Pullout shelves, bins, baskets and racks in lower cabinets allow easy access to their contents. Dont forget to add these under sinks, with cutouts that fit around the plumbing. No more getting down on your hands and knees to see and find things! And with these, you can get to and therefore use the space thats even at the very back of your cabinets.

3. Next, Id be sure each storage area is appropriate for whatever you plan to store there, and that each has the appropriate hardware, compartments, etc. for its contents. That means your sports equipment requires space that's different from what your music and video collections need.

For hanging table linens, dowels bolted onto the back walls or mounted on a frame bolted to the sides or bottom of pantries, closets or cabinets make linens easily accessible while minimizing creases and fold lines. No more digging to the bottom of a drawer of folded linens to find a favorite tablecloth, or having to empty the entire drawer to get it out! And no more linens that are too wrinkled to use as is! This is also a great way to use a narrow area of otherwise wasted space.

4. Plan storage scattered throughout the entire house. Ideally, everything will be stored near where it's used. No point in hauling stuff through half the house just to use it!

Youll love having closets and cabinets the pantry, too whose lights go on automatically as their doors open, the way a refrigerators does. (One of the many benefits of built-in cabinets is the inside lighting thats possible.) No more groping to find manual light switches, especially when your hands are often too full to reach for a switch or theyre wet! This is also wonderful for kids and adults in wheelchairs who cant easily reach a closets traditional light switch. A plunger switch is inside most refrigerators, but magnetic contact switches similar to those used in home security alarm systems can also do the job throughout your house.

5. Id also plan for your most frequently-used items to be easiest and quickest to reach. Then make sure the things you use less often fit in the remaining spaces.

Electrical outlets inside drawers, cabinets or in appliance barns on countertops allow small appliances to be stored out of sight and used without frequent plugging and unplugging. (Ideally, everything you store in these spaces will be used nearby so you wont need any extension cords.) You avoid countertop clutter, the items never get dusty and are always ready to use, and no one needs to fiddle with the plugs especially when their hands are wet or arthritic. Just be sure to measure the sizes of the appliances you plan to store before you finalize these spaces dimensions, so you avoid any surprises about something not fitting inside.

6. Your largest and heaviest possessions also need to be the easiest and quickest to get to, so don't put them up high or in a corner thats tricky to navigate. Fill your remaining spaces with your lightweight items.

Separate activity areas in the kitchen will make everything efficiently at hand exactly where you need it: baking and mixing, food preparation, cooking, cleanup, entertaining, beverage service, etc.

7. Be sure your storage minimizes having any wasted space anywhere in the house.

Hang a detachable hamper inside a pullout or tiltout lower cabinet door or storage bench, or inside a closet door. A cloth hamper hanging on a frame makes transporting clothes or linens to the washing machine especially easy, but wire or plastic hampers also work. No more dropping items on the way to the laundry room that you might trip over! Choose materials that allow ventilation in the hamper, to prevent mold from forming on any damp or wet items that remain inside for more than a few days.

8. Make your storage areas accessible so none go unused just because they cant be easily reached.

Full-extension drawers, pullout shelves and file cabinets all on easy-gliding metal tracks allow you to reach and see all their contents, so you can use all their space.

9. Id also look at traffic flows in the house. If the most frequently-used items are stored in the major traffic paths, no one will have to go out of their way to get what they need and youll have a very efficient house. On the other hand, you can also affect where the traffic detours through the house via where you store popular items. So if you want to eliminate bottlenecks where people often collide with each other, move the popular items to different locations so some traffic will flow along new paths.

Adequate clearance around every open drawer, hinged cabinet or door, and appliance door will keep traffic flowing and save you some steps. Be sure you have room to open and move around all the drawers and cabinets you need to open at once when youre emptying the dishwasher, putting groceries away, working on a project, etc.

10. My final point is to make as many of your storage elements adjustable and removable as possible. The storage spaces that work for you initially can then be modified to remain as effective as ever as your needs change.

Open shelving or you can remove some cabinet doors gives you instant identification of and access to your stored goods. Stored items get more light around them and are easier to see, the motion of opening cabinets is not required, and this saves some trial and error if you dont recall precisely whats stored where.

Things That Add Value To Your Fixer-Upper Home

Things that add value to your fixer-upper home

Fixer-upper homes apparently need a lot of work to increase their market value. What things should you do to really make the most out of your renovation efforts thus increasing the value of your fixer-upper home?

Pristine walls Fixing up your walls is an inexpensive way to increase the value of your fixer-upper homer. You can do the paint job yourself. Choose colors that will make the house look expensive.

Renovate the bathroom It is known fact that a great bathroom will increase the value of any house. Homebuyers tend to take a look at the bathroom first so focusing on renovating this part of the house is a must. Adding another bathroom in the house can further increase its value.

Renovate the kitchen Aside from the bathroom the kitchen is another part of the house that can increase its value. Home buyers, especially the ladies, take this as a major factor when considering buying a home.

Improve landscaping Taking care of the lawn and making it look attractive will add to the value of your fixer-upper home. You don't need to hire professional landscapers to improve its appearance.

Dont overlook the garage, closets and laundry These three parts of the house are most of the time overlooked. As simple as them may seem, they can increase the value of the fixer-upper home because it adds convenience. Bedrooms with spacious closets are always attractive. Garage and pathway maintenance is also important. Lastly, a house with a laundry room will also increase its value.

Maintain windows Cleaning your windows every now and then will help maintain its good condition. This won't increase the houses value but it will help in maintaining its current value.

Change carpets Nothing is more unappealing than dirty and stinky carpets. Carpets tend to acquire a lot of dirt and cleaning old carpet may not do the trick. What you want to do is change the entire carpeting for the house. This will make a big difference.

Remove clutter Throw away excessive things that are eye sores. Excessive junk can make a house less appealing and lower its value.

In general, you should fix up the exterior first because this is what people see first and it will give them an impression that your house is a keeper and is of high value. This doesnt mean that you should ignore the interior. Bottom-line, the most important part of the house that you should focus on to increase a fixer-upper homes value are the bathroom and the kitchen.

Development talk trails parking sale

THE IDEA OF BUILDING AN 18-20 story hotel/parking deck development in downtown Little Rock that could weigh in north of $50 million is gaining a wider audience. Who would make it happen and when the project would launch construction are among the laundry list of important details still up in the air.

For now, the idea is a drawingboard dream of convention boosters. One scenario receiving attention is to redevelop a parking lot and historic mixed-use building into a 300-400 room hotel with 20,000-25,000 SF of meeting space topping a 650-750-slot parking deck.

The grand redevelopment would require gutting the 84-year-old Democrat Printing & Lithograph Building, now home to apartments, retail space and Arkansas Business Publishing Group at the northwest corner of Scott and Second streets.

The facade of the DP&L Building could be incorporated into the parking deck's exterior to preserve its architectural character. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on Dec. 17, 1998, as part of the failed Block 2 redevelopment.

CSK Hotels of Fort Smith, which owns the adjoining 0.4-acre parking lot at the southwest corner of Markham and Scott streets, has a different vision.

Storm Nolan, CSK Hotels partner, isn't sure that the $50 million-plus dream project will ever become reality. And if it does, it won't involve his company.

"What they want is a full-service hotel with a lot more rooms than we're interested in doing," Nolan said. "We don't feel it's an appropriate investment. We look at the numbers and don't see how it will work."

His firm is interested in developing a $15 million Aloft Hotel on the parking lot. The project would have 130 rooms and rise to 10-12 stories, with on-site parking for about 30 vehicles.

The remaining parking needs would be met through valet parking at nearby decks and lots, the same arrangement used by other downtown hotels.

CSK's plans for the property are on hold because the city has an option to purchase it. The agreement, tied to the property since 1999, includes conditions that now make it impractical for the city to buy the property by exercising the option as well as making it very expensive for CSK to buy out the city's option.

"Right now, the option isn't doing anybody any good," Nolan said. "Downtown is a great area, and we hope we can contribute to it. I think the city will eventually allow us to build a hotel. We'll see."

In the meantime, CSK is content to collect parking fees on its $950,000 acquisition. The lot generates revenue of more than $65,000 annually.

Competing Offers

The Little Rock Advertising & Promotions Commission is mulling over its options after making an unsuccessful run to buy the parking lot from Paul Esterer and Todd Rice.

The A&P Commission thought it was about to finalize a deal to buy the parking lot earlier this year only to discover that CSK had submitted a competing offer.

Gene Fortson, a member of the Little Rock A&P Commission, said Rice approached the city about buying the property and talks later shifted to the A&P Commission.

"We made a contingent offer of $900,000, subject to 45 days for due diligence and the approval of A&P Commission," he said.

Fortson said Rice relayed a verbal counteroffer of $950,000 with no conditions and closing in only a few days.

The counter offer was "destined to be turned down," Fortson said. "I was disappointed."

Rice said it was at least six months from the initial contact about selling the property until the last contact with the city.

"It just didn't work out," he said. "There were details that were involved that just didn't work. The other guys stepped up and got it done, and the city didn't."

Rice said the offer from CSK Hotels came out of the blue during negotiations with the city's A&P commission.

"They contacted us," Rice said. "They sought us out. We went under contract with them and closed the deal."

CSK's Storm Nolan said his company had been scouting for a site in downtown Little Rock for awhile before Rice was first approached in February. He was surprised to learn the city had been trying to buy the property.

"We didn't find out about that until afterwards," Nolan said. "A week after we bought this, we found out they had been negotiating to buy it. We want to work with the city, and we don't want to be adversarial."

An added layer of complexity to the property that could come into play is an agreement giving the operators of The Peabody Little Rock the first right of refusal to develop a hotel on the parking lot owned by CSK.

The 10-year agreement, set to expire in 2010, is a product of the renegotiated lease on the Peabody project between the Peabody Hotel Group of Memphis and the city.

The "Tract B Agreement" was negotiated by the Peabody Hotel Group to protect its investment in redeveloping the Arkansas Excelsior Hotel into the Peabody. The city would have to own the property before provisions of the agreement could be triggered.

Following the unsuccessful attempt to buy the parking lot from Rice and Esterer, city officials have rattled the eminent domain saber as a possibility of forcing a sale outside the entangling restrictions of the option agreement.

A forced sale is among the possible courses of action on the table as the A&P Commission begins assessing the next move.

Property History

Ownership of the parking lot at the southwest corner of Markham and Scott streets in downtown Little Rock originally was split between two parties.

J. Chandler & Co., led by John Chandler, owned the eastern and western portions of the property, and Lawrence and Verna Fisher owned an 8,100-SF strip in the middle.

Although it was the smallest piece of the development puzzle, the Fisher property carried a premium price tag. Block 2 LLC, led by Paul Esterer and Todd Rice, paid $500,000 for it on June 29, 1999.

The Chandler pieces of the parking lot were acquired on Nov. 4, 1998, as part of a $1.4 million deal with Block 2 LLC that included the seven-story, 85,000-SF Archer Drug Building at 107 E. Markham St.

That same day, Democrat Printing & Lithographing Co. sold its namesake 82,000-SF building at 114 E. Second St. to Block 2 LLC for $650,000.

A 30-foot wide strip on the south end of the parking lot later was peeled off to accommodate the development of a retail annex on the north side of the neighboring DP&L Building.

Today, that retail space is home to Crush Wine Bar, the vacant Block 2 management offices (which will soon be occupied by employees of Arkansas Business Publishing Group), River Market Wine & Spirits and Gifts of Arkansas. The row of parking slots in front of the annex is part of the Block 2 project.

The remaining parking area, about 0.4 acres, was kept separate.

Though assembled in conjunction with the Block 2 project, the parking lot was not used to secure the development funding, which included an $11.5 million government guaranteed loan. The DP&L Building, Archer Drug and Wallace Building were.

These properties were taken over by LSF5 Block 2 LLC after the affiliate of Lone Star U.S. Acquisition LLC of Dallas bought the long-in-default loan for $7.5 million in September 2007 from the Department of Housing & Urban Development and foreclosed on it in March.

Lone Star is clearing out apartment tenants in the DP&L Building as leases expire, a move thought to precede converting the 32 units to condominium space. The company also is pushing short-term leases for the office and retail tenants.

On April 30, DTLR Partners LLC of Fort Smith (an affiliate of CSK Hotels) bought the parking lot for $950,000 from Block 2 Development LLC (formerly known as Block 2 LLC), led by Esterer and Rice.

Extreme Laundry: The Latest Laundry Trends

The cost and complexity of the laundry room continues to evolve, so it seems important to look at a few of the latest trends in the parts, pieces and design of this significant space.

At our "Luxury Kitchen Trends" presentation at the International Builders Show in February, I listened to my fellow speaker, CKD Connie Edwards, discuss the incredible design opportunities related to the expanding role of the laundry room in the home.

The Kitchen/Bath Industry Show in April also showcased a huge variety of laundry appliance features, both aesthetic and performance related, and Design Idea Center included concepts in the laundry area focusing on a variety of functions beyond simply the tasks of washing and drying dirty clothes.

My friendly appliance expert, CKD Mary Jo Camp, tells me that prices for the washer and dryer today run from $600 at the low end to $3,500 for a pair of front-loaders on pedestals with steam features. In these appliances can go as high as $6,500 for certain little giants or $24,000 for the commercial pair offered to the few "extreme launderers."

Call me old-fashioned, but I'd still say these costs are noteworthy. They make a statement about the value of the laundry function to today's consumers, and, as a result, the changing role of this space in the home from a design standpoint. We are looking at much more than a laundry room in today's designs there's a lot more going on in this space than just cleaning clothing so it seems a good time to mention some of the design ideas and considerations I'm finding.

CLEVER SOLUTIONS

Design considerations for the laundry space have changed, and that means we as designers must be thinking outside the box to devise clever solutions to address our clients' primary needs and concerns. In particular, work and storage space are becoming increasingly important components of the laundry area.

While I have long been a proponent of the elevated washer/ dryer, our firm is finding many people will still opt for the standard height or front loaders with the ability to design a standard counter above them, increasing the space for folding, sorting and storing clothes prior to their return to the dressing areas of their owners.

Several of the front loaders allow for the removal of the top of the appliances to accommodate a counter finishing at the standard 36" height.

When designed this way, access to shut-offs should be planned in an adjacent base cabinet or in an otherwise easily accessible area. Maintaining at least 48" in front of the machines provides for clearance around the door swings and for improved access for the variety of users.

The traditional laundry tub seems less critical than in years' past, but at least one sink for hand washing and possibly a second for auxiliary activities such as potting plants or arranging flowers seems popular - a dirty sink and a clean one, specifically.

Traditional storage of laundry detergents and aids has been next to or above the appliances. A favorite new concept for me as well is the pedestal that houses a drawer for such detergents, dispensing the proper amount as communicated by the washer, eliminating the need to lift and haul those heavy bottles. Other laundry aids are still best stored next to rather than above - the appliances, and cabinet accessories are available to make this storage easy to access.

We know the laundry room has risen from the basement, but statistics show a pretty equal division between locating the laundry near the kitchen/social center, and the bedrooms where much of the laundry is generated. Many appliance manufacturers have accommodated these preferences by creating machines that run more quietly than ever before. Even so, sound insulation in the walls should be planned to minimize the noise factor.

It is worth mentioning that multiple laundries are no longer rare - and many clients will choose to locate one in each of these preferred locations to maximize convenience.

Sorting dirty laundry has been made significantly easier by the incorporation of multiple bins, with a common choice being three bins: one for darks, one for lights and one for delicates. Today we are seeing a fourth bin being incorporated for collecting those items destined for the dry cleaner. All of these bins are usually behind cabinetry or otherwise concealed to keep the space looking good, especially when it is located in a higher traffic area.

Laundry chutes are back with a vengeance. Again, they drop into a concealed, generous collection spot in the laundry, keeping appearances tidy.

While the clothes line seems to be making a comeback in answer to environmental issues, several wonderful new accessories are available to provide maximum hanging in a minimum of indoor space. In addition to the hanging racks, the design of a showerlike area - complete with floor drain - or at least a hanging rod at adjustable heights over the sink, is a great idea. This system can be expanded to include nets or shelves that can be used to dry sweaters or other hand washables that must be dried flat. Remember to provide proper ventilation when planning this much moisture in today's tight homes.

Some storage for clean items is often desirable, as well. Frequently, table linens will hang in the laundry room, so closet or hanging space is also important for this. In some cases, especially near the bedrooms, cubbies, shelves or bins are sometimes planned to store clean laundry until it is picked up by its owner. Making these bins removable, such as baskets on sliding rails, makes pick-up and delivery easier. These areas can also be customized for individual family members to make the area more family friendly.

Ironing is making a comeback, too. Built-in storage for the ironing board and equipment is showing up in multiple locations around the home - the laundry and the master dressing area being most common. It is critical to be sure the user can approach the ironing center from either side. Traditional mangles and rotary irons are showing up, particularly useful for table and other linens, and they require careful planning as the user operates from a seated position.

While there are many auxiliary activities that can certainly be included in the laundry room, I'll just mention the one that showed up repeatedly at the recent K/ BIS. Where there is hanging space with a floor drain and likely a raised threshold, adding a handheld spray, usually low on the wall, can add multiple functions, particularly as a pet bathing station.

It comes as no surprise that the space given to the laundry has grown, and as a result of this growth, expectations for what this space will provide have grown, too. Clients seem to be looking for a flexible space that can accommodate not just a washer and dryer, but a place to sort, fold, do hand washing and in many cases, accomplish other storage and household activities. Hopefully these ideas will help you meet those needs.

Pet-pleasant residence decreases worry

Our aim is to make improvements to people's lives as a result of architecture. Acquiring a place that supports your family's life style decreases emotional stress and contributes to psychological and bodily perfectly currently being.

It is a reality of living that a great many lifestyles involve pets as key and valued members of the spouse and children.

From structure in-the-wall cat tunnels to designing outside canine runs, a bit more house owners are considering remodels with pets in mind. We have engineered specialized pet doors, indoor/outside recreation locations, and even canine showers for our clientele and their pets.

If you are considering a remodel and couldn't just imagine leaving Rover out, then right here are some concepts.

A utility place -- these types of as a laundry room or mudroom -- with immediate entry to the exterior is a outstanding area for pet-pleasant architectural options. This room is a fantastic position for a dog shower (indeed, they do exist). A puppy shower has tiled walls that achieve about 3 ft in height, a detachable handheld showerhead, and an open floor- stage entry so your canine can walk precise in. You can use the shower to give your canine a entire scrub-down or just to clean off muddy paws.

When we crafted a dog shower for 1 of our purchasers, she attests that her considerable bull mastiff now seriously enjoys bathing!

Puppy showers can also be handy in other techniques. You can use them to spray house crops, clear dirty boots and other out of doors products, or hang moist garments to drip dry. If you have scaled-down canines and pets, a massive utility sink set up at counter-degree can serve the identical purposes.

If cats are your issue, you could install in this place a cabinet with a swinging cat door to hide the sight and odor of a litter box.

A bin connected within a cabinet that tilts open gives an basic and cleaner way for you to retailer and scoop out dry cat or puppy meals. Regardless of whether enclosed inside of a cabinet or not, you will probably also want to have lots of hooks in this room to hang leashes, collars, brushes and so forth.

This space can come to be a pet retreat with automated feeders and consuming fountains. If you want to contain your pets in your place but not absolutely isolate them, you could set up a half-height door for your dog or an interior screen door for your cat.

And speaking of holding your pets within, ceramic tile, vinyl- composition tile, stained concrete and tricky rubber coating make resilient, straightforward-to-clear flooring for pets. Evade affordable vinyl, which can be torn by claws and sharp toenails.

Even although we are chatting about remodels that could enrich your pet's lives, the development practice can be demanding for pets -- and people for that issue. Pet behavioral specialists suggest setting up a single building-absolutely free place in the home for your pet's sanity.

Continue to keep their meals and h2o in the exact same location in the course of the construction operation. Introduce your pets to your construction crew and label the pet space so crews you should not unintentionally let out your pets. Check out to pet-evidence your family home as well as you can in the course of construction. Make certain nails and tacks are picked up and your pets are locked up or out of the home when the loud noises come.

When you and your pet make it by the hard element, you will not regret having a functional and well-constructed remodel, notably if it would make your family home friendlier for your dog or cat -- and more handy for you.

Unique Gifts For Dad: What A Son Can Give A Dad . . . Time

As I crossed the threshold, I hang my coat on the coat hook and look into the mirror like I have a million times before and remember back to the time when we bought this custom etched mirrored coat rack as one of the gifts for dad on Father's Day when I was very young. We ordered it so carefully making sure it was perfect, and would say just the right sentiment; after all, unique personalized gifts are not returnable! But the moment we had waited for finally came and Dad opened it and he seemed so surprised and happy with his mirrored gift. He even placed it at the door of the home we had on the lake.

Little did I realize how important this piece would become over time. Every weekend we'd go there and fish, or swim, and had a great time. I recollect a dull moment, even though we didn't have a television or computer there. Dad would play card games with us kids or tell us stories that were all from his memories. And then Sunday would come and we'd have to go back to the city. We would remove our caps and jackets from the hooks of that etched mirror and head to our weekday lives. Dreaming of our time together again the next weekend we'd spend at the cabin.

No matter what happens in life, no matter how rough the road has gotten, I could always go back to a time at the lake where dad in his infinite wisdom would tell a story or impart some wisdom that would make me see my bad situation in a better light. Funny how a simple piece of artwork can evoke such strong memories. I never would have dreamed that this gift for dad would span generations, and mean so much to so many.

Now, here I am 40 years later looking at the old man in the custom etched mirror. He has a remarkable resemblance to my dad! And then I flash back to the time spent with dear old dad at the cabin. The fun times that we had planning and all the time that was spent with each other was not the important thing instead it was the investment in each others lives. Time spent with dad wasn’t ever trivial. It was time spent learning, laughing, and enjoying the person he was. I can only hope that when my boys grow up they will look into this personalized, custom etched mirror that was once meant to be a gift for dad, and remember the times they spent with their dad with such splendor. This mirror that is a reflection of much simpler times. Is there any better gift than one that will build memories of Dad?

Avett Brothers make a splash on Red Butte stage

AVETT BROTHERS, Red Butte Garden Amphitheater, Aug. 25

A band which is been toiling away for decades underneath the radar of the mainstream songs enterprise stopped by Salt Lake City's Red Butte Backyard Amphitheatre Tuesday evening to supply a message -- the Avett Brothers are here, and they're likely to turn just about every strategy you've at any time had about roots songs upside down and inside of out.

North Carolina natives Scott and Seth Avett, along with bass player Bob Crawford and cellist Joe Kwon, released their "punkgrass" rocket in the sultry twilight in front of a in the vicinity of-capacity crowd at Red Butte's slickly remodeled out of doors venue.

From the opening bars of "Laundry Place" from the forthcoming "I And Fancy And You" album out Sept. 29, the brothers' took around the minds, bodies and spirits of the fortunate souls who ventured out for the weeknight hoedown.

The Avetts have the audio and nuance of common bluegrass and nation down pat (believe Bill Monroe and Hank Williams Sr.) and can throw it down straight outta the Great Lonesome, but their songcraft lets their punk power out in super, surprising places. But, just when you believe you have obtained a manage on their mojo, they'll shift gears once again, as they did Tuesday when Seth Avett took the stage by himself with his acoustic guitar for a rendition of the haunting "The Ballad of Really like and Dislike" from 2007's indie album "Emotionalism" that might have been the preferred moment at the garden venue this summertime ... or at any time.

Both equally Seth (regularly on guitar) and Scott (as a rule on banjo) are multi-instrumentalists ... each took turns on the keyboard, and Scott jumped behind a drum kit for the power-pop stomper "Kick Drum Heart," an additional tune off the new record, which got an early release on a July EP.

Equally of the brothers have large voices, and Scott's was showcased in his turn at a solo spot on stage with "Murder in the City" from one more 2007 offering, "The 2nd Gleam" EP.

The Avetts achieve a little something that eludes so a wide range of "ideal" but not "magnificent" bands -- they mix remarkable musicianship, song composing and bonafide ties to tradition, but do it in a way that generates some thing genre-defying and personal. Their musical amalgam is an entirely new creature that sprang forth from ground cultivated by legends who came ahead of them. Some mystical brotherly connection, so very common in the community of audio, can be at perform here, or probably it truly is some thing simpler ... as hinted at in this lyric.

Green your renovation refuse

Paper, plastic, glass ... Sheetrock? Although you may not yet have to recycle everything from a small home-improvement project, it's a great idea to divert debris from landfills, says Maximo (maximoconstruction.com). Her home city, for example, aims to take its recycling from the current 72 percent to 100 percent by 2020.

"Start by reusing anything that's in good condition and free of asbestos and lead paint," she says. (Have a professional assessment done if you're unsure.) "Install your old kitchen cabinets in the laundry room or garage, or frame a new closet with reclaimed lumber." Ceramic and stone tile, too, can often be reused. See below for where to dispose of some other common items.

Salvage yard Drop off anything that's in good shape and free of toxins: surplus building materials (such as unused grout and electrical wire), hardware, appliances less than five years old, and windows and doors with working parts like hinges and sash weights. (Some yards will pick up large loads for no charge.) TIP Choose a yard that benefits a nonprofit--with a receipt, your donation may be tax-deductible.

Where's My Money, House & Freedom?

Yesterday, I was talking to Allan Hardman about being a non-reactive person. Being a spiritual person, I thought it was always best to be in love with life and never get upset about anything. HA! Allan got a kick out that. He said, "What if you were just a reactive person?" That stopped me dead in my tracks. What if I was just reactive? Well, then I could stop being frustrated about being frustrated.

Revolutionary! Now, that felt peaceful.

Have you ever been upset about the results in your life or lack of results? What about being frustrated about the way you were being?

Welcome to the club. The more I study, teach and practice the Laws of Attraction, the more I think I know what to do. So how come I'm not having EVERYTHING I WANT RIGHT NOW?! Waaaaaaaaaaaa.

Okay, that's a bit dramatic. But it feels so intense when you are doing all the right things, thinking positive thoughts and your goals and dreams aren't coming in the time frame you want them or not at all.

What to do? Stop resisting what is so. Yes, your reality actually means nothing about who you are right now or what you will be experiencing later today. It's just what is true in the moment. We don't need to give it any significance.

Let me give an example. Some years back, my former partner and I bought an investment property. The plan was to add a bedroom, bath and laundry room to the existing house, along with landscaping and other improvements.

Then we would sell it and use that money to buy our dream house with a view of the water. The dream house part was supposed to happen a few months after the purchase of the investment property. So, after a year and a half of not having the construction complete on the property, I was looking at the reality of what was not happening and feeling a bit irritated; sometimes very disappointed. Guess what that got me? More irritation, disappointment and snafus on the addition. I started making it mean something about who I was. Here I was, teaching that you can have anything you want, and I was living in a house I wasn't in love with. I knew, in my heart, this thinking would never get me anywhere.

Looking at what you don't like or beating yourself up for the way you think will NOT serve in you in creating a fulfilling life. It won't bring you prosperity or abundance of any kind either. Oh! And worrying and stressing on reality won't help the situation either.

I chose to look at what the essence of the new house was. I wanted to have big dinner parties. I wanted people to come and feel cozy and enjoy spending the night. I wanted the house to feel spacious, organized and elegant. Ah...even visualizing gave me peace. So, I went right to work (or should say play!) on creating that essence right then while living in the far from dream house.

Because I followed this inspired action, I found a place of bliss. I cleaned things out. I'm bought things to beautify the house. I added some more flowers to the front yard. I stopped waiting for the joy to come from the new house. JOY CAN NOT WAIT. Joy is what brings you more inspiration, more love, more joy and more prosperity.

In the two weeks that followed, I had more mega big business ideas, completed more projects and received more unexpected money than I had all year prior to that! Why? Because I got happy about the now. I stopped resisting where I was. I made now feel good. I also stopped waiting until I was in the house, to travel. I booked the cruise to Alaska with Abraham-Hicks .

Sometimes, the realities that put a cloud over you are subtle. I did not think that my house situation was impacting the decisions I made so profoundly until I did something different. I thought the house was a mild irritation and that sometime soon it would be handled. But I was waiting. Waiting for what? Waiting for it to manifest, so that I could be really joyful. Rubbish! I got happy and I now live on a hill with a gorgeous view of the water.

What are you waiting for? Are you waiting for the relationship, baby, kids moving out, money or time? Is there anything you are irritated about? Do think someone else is standing in the way of what you want?

Do you think something has to happen before you can have freedom?

The only thing that needs to happen is to know that it's all about YOU! You get to decide if you have freedom now or later. You are responsible for having your life feel perfect for you. I love feeling in control. And it's an illusion that we are not.

Blessings and abundance to you. It brings me joy to know that you are all seeking easy ways to bring peace to your life. That YOU know that you get to have a life that rocks!

Pauline Trost, wife of then-Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Carlisle Trost, presented the idea of building temporary lodging facilities on major military medical centers to Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher who took the idea and made it into a reality.

Typically, the temporary lodging facilities, known as Fisher Houses are 5,000-to 16,000-square-foot homes donated by Fisher House Foundation. Each house is designed to provide eight to 21 suites. All are professionally furnished and decorated in the tone and style of the local region. The houses can accommodate anywhere from 16 to 42 family members. They feature a common kitchen, laundry facilities, a spacious dining room and an inviting living room with a library and toys for children.

When Steve and Deborah Romano's son, Aviation Maintenance Administrationman [2.sup.nd] Class Steve Romano Jr., was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) they did not know what to do.

"It's amazing after 30 years in the Navy, I didn't know about the Fisher House," said Romano, a retired master chief.

Before finding out about the Fisher House, the Romanos were staying in hotels off base and the Navy Lodge on base at National Naval Medical Center (NNMC), Bethesda, Md.

"The first benefit [of staying in the Fisher House] is we are close by to support our son in the most trying time of his life," said Romano. "For us to be able to be here is worth its weight in gold."

Romano explained that if the Fisher House had not been an option, more than $10,000 would have been spent in hotel costs. "Originally I didn't know where we were going to stay," said Deborah, "I would have stayed in the car just to be with him. Having this facility makes our time here easier and we can concentrate on his medical situation."

According to Cindy F. Campbell, vice president for community relations and media affairs for the Fisher House, the facilities were designed for the family to feel at home.

"Home. A home where you can stay, cook dinner and eat in our lovely dining room," said Campbell. "Or, sit in the living room, read a book then go to your room later that night. We really hope that these houses are always full."

With Fisher Houses around the world in constant use, it's necessary to plan for new houses.

"Fisher House relies on donations to keep us operating and building new houses, once we build a new home we give them to the Veterans Administration or the Department of Defense," said Campbell.

"We take great pride [in knowing] that when we donate these houses to the military they are stunning and that they are gorgeous," said Campbell. "You can walk in and feel a sense of comfort right away. We want the houses to be warm and inviting. We want you to be comfortable so the only focus is on that person in the hospital."

Retired Senior Chief Journalist Cynthia Panzani and her husband Rino have been using the Fisher House facilities worldwide since 1991.

"Initially there was no Fisher House," said Cynthia, who is a breast cancer survivor. "When Rino and I are here [at the Fisher House] it's like we are surrounded by family." Cynthia lives with her husband in LaMaddalena, Italy, and has been undergoing breast cancer treatment for more than 20 years. The couple often has to travel to get her treatments.

During one of the Panzani's visits to the Fisher House, Rino recalled the selfless actions of the faculty's staff and other guests that he says, "made me feel like family."

"Many years ago, Cynthia had surgery in the morning at 7 a.m. that lasted till 10 p.m.," said Rino. "When I could finally see her she was still unconscious, so they told me to go home. I went home after a stressful day, skipping breakfast and lunch. I was just going to have a bowl of soup and go to bed. But, as soon as I got to the Fisher House everyone was waiting on me; the table was set, and they prepared a lobster dinner for me. I almost cried; it was wonderful, I never forgot that."

According to the official Fisher House Foundation website the foundation believes in the promotion of the family environment and the tie between military members. These two things combine together to create a place where people can share experiences and make lifelong friends.

"Cynthia Panzani made me feel like family," said Personnel Specialist [1.sup.st] Class Gloria Sebastian. Gloria and Cynthia met a few years ago and Cynthia is a friend and mentor to Gloria as she goes through her own treatments for breast cancer.

Volunteers help the staff at the facilities create a comfortable environment. These volunteers donate their time to aid service members and their families with day-to-day tasks.

"I think the concept of the Fisher House is important because it helps support the families and keeps them together," said Christy Hertz, a Fisher House volunteer. "I retired from the Army and felt like it was time to 'pay it back.' I volunteer because it makes me feel good."

Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher's dream lives on in 53 homes across the United States and abroad helping military families in need by providing a quality of life in the places they built. The foundation also helps by administering and sponsoring scholarships for military children, the Hero Miles program and co-sponsors of the Newman's Own Awards program. For more information see the foundation's website www.fisherhouse.org.

Paying for Wool Carpets - Are Wool Carpets For Me?

Need to I give consideration to purchasing wool carpets? Wool carpets are amazing! Wool carpets have made my daily life miserable! This is actually a single of all those scenarios wherever both of these statements can be one hundred% real. My desire is to allow you discover which 1 of these groups you belong also right before you go by the expense of investing in wool carpets.

I have been cleaning carpets in Boulder Colorado for around 17 a long time and I have cleaned some splendid and not so remarkable wool carpets. Wool is soft and it feels beneficial to stroll, crawl, or lay on. It feels like walking on gentle hair. Wow! It is gentle hair! The wool fiber consist of a few fundamental parts. The epidermis (cuticle) consisting of protective, overlapping scales on the fibers outer surface. The cortex, which composes most of the wools fiber and the middle of the wool fiber is referred to as the medulla. A single of the information that may make wool kinda scary is that it is a protein. Why could this be negative? Wool proteins can chemically bond with other proteins that can forever attach by itself to the wool fiber.

The authentic protein dilemma often arises from our pets. Most of our pets throw up their foods which is chiefly a Protein base. These pet accidents can speedily flip our beloved soft haired carpet into a visual tapestry of pet throw up, urine stains and other digestive processes that I do not like to believe that about. Routinely, these stains will for good affix themselves and come to be component of the wool fiber. An alternative resource of protein arrives from the foods we try to eat. Little one food could perhaps have a huge protein concentrate and if applied to your wool carpet it may likely turn into a sentimental remembrance of your child's child years. Wool is regarded the best carpet fiber in the planet and if I did not have pets and minor youngsters I would seriously give some thought to the expense. You also have to be terribly cautious not to get bleach on your wool carpet. Bleach will genuinely trigger the wool fiber to dissolve and leave you with a hole in the center of your carpet. This will mean that placing wool carpets in a laundry space would probably not be the easiest of recommendations. A great deal of above the counter cleaners have a modest amount of bleach in them. The strengths of wool carpet feature that it feels soft, holds shade seriously properly, wears very well, soil resistant, cleans well and it is obviously non flammable. The wool fiber is also very elastic and it can increase three to 4 instances its' dimensions. This allows the wool fiber be naturally sturdy.

The bad features of wool fiber embody that it is truly delicate to alkalinity (substantial PH soaps), expenses greater than synthetic fibers, expenses significantly more to thoroughly clean, not resistant to Protein stains, will dissolve in bleach and can be ruined by carpet beetles and moths. Think of the pluses and minuses as they pertain to your existence and if you determine to acquire the brilliant wool carpet fiber, see our unique carpet cleansing treatment guideline for wool carpets at http://www.colorado-carpet-masters.com. You will also obtain no cost carpet fix guides, allergy guides, carpet selecting guides, carpet spot guides, carpet cleaning client guides an much greater.
